Hello again!! I keep hoping to have some time to do a longer form comic or story here, but I’m still in the midst of recovering from burnout (while still in the situation that caused the burnout, a tricky balance!). So instead, I thought I’d share some squiggly sketches and some of the things that have been giving me joy.
I’ve been really enjoying watching collage videos lately! A couple years back, I got this lovely “Cut Paper Pictures” book.
I’ve always loved a lot of texture in my work, so it’s been fun to ingest these. I found a lovely kids book artist, Emily Schofield, and I’ve been devouring her videos too. Soothing, pretty, and kind of like watching someone assemble a jigsaw.
There’s a new ~ trend ~ of “junk journalling”, a sort of scrapbooking on steroids that I’ve been liking. I did some minor version of this when I made my Halifax sketchbook. I would love to keep doing this in my sketchbooks, gluing things in and making it feel more textured and fun.
I’ve been continuing sketching just a little here and there, and it’s been emotionally so helpful for me!! I have returned to a practice I used to do back in college- filling a page with many different versions of the same thing. I used to do it with “matryoshkas”, where I would make many sizes of something (like a bear) from big to small.
Anyway I hope you’re holding up okay!
ok love u bye
Matryoshkas are such a fun idea! I think I might try my own version with collage some time. I also like watching collage videos but haven’t found Substack to be a good place for them, maybe YouTube is the place to be!
uh-oh, am i gonna get into junk journaling?? i've totally done em while I've travelled, but this may need to become a more regular thing??
also, the pools!! <3 <3
