For the Fun of it - we are expecting

a baby that is

Hiya!! I shared the news on insta, so I thought I’d pop in here and say that we’re expecting a baby boy at the end of August!

I’ve been trying to be really open and telling everyone- I had a lot of anxiety about what telling people I’m having a baby means for my career. I know it might seem a little strange- I have been making kids books and working in kids media for the last 13 (!) years. I’ve been writing books FOR babies for ages (it might even surprise some of you that I don’t have kids yet!).

It’s a complicated thing! I had advice from friends to wait until the last possible moment to tell my day job. I frantically researched mat leave (California has good mat leave for the States, but pretty minor compared to my home country of Canada). Debated how much I should even take, would my work be mad at me if I took this amount.

I work a contract job- which means that the end of my mat leave puts me close to the end of my contract, which is not ideal for them keeping me onto a hopeful second season. Also, while working through the nausea and exhaustion that the first trimester bestowed upon me (luckily, I am feeling a bit better!)

I’ve been very lucky to have a supportive job, and friends who have gone through the process. The reality is that change is always going to be complicated and come with all sorts of research and decisions to make! Anyway, overall we’re very excited and I’m sure you’ll see lots more baby drawings in the future.

Also, I did the drawing below with fountain pen ink put in a big ol DIY marker thing. I wish fountain pen ink photographed better- the color switches are so fun.
